CADIERRA Louis (19th-20th century)
"Fortress on the Île Saint-Honorat"
Oil on canvas,
Signed lower left,
Titled and numbered on the back of the stretcher by the artist "No. 1948 Saint-Honorat",
Artist's cartouche on the frame.
A beautiful, high-contrast work by the painter Louis Cadierra depicting the fortified monastery of Lérins Abbey on the Île Saint-Honorat at sunset.
The painter's palette is delicate, the interplay of light is masterfully executed, and the impasto of his paint gives relief and depth to his composition.
Of Italian origin, Louis Cadierra primarily painted landscapes of the French Riviera, but also of Italy (Venice) and North Africa (Morocco and Tunisia) during his travels. The painter paid particular attention to the interplay of light and color choices in his compositions to represent as faithfully as possible what he saw.
Note: Very small, old Restoration, without impact.
Dimensions: 22 x 27 cm unframed and 27 x 32 cm with its original gilded wooden frame.
The companion piece to this work, "L'Estérel à la tombée de la nuit" (The Estérel at Nightfall), is also for sale.
