CALÈS Pierre (1870-1961)

“ Tencin Square, late summer morning close to autumn”

Oil on thick paper,
Signed and dated lower left,
Titled on the back by the artist: “le 11 7bre 53 , Late summer morning close to autumn"

Beautiful work with strong contrast by the Dauphinois painter, Pierre Calès also known as Abbot Calès, which represents a view of the church square in Tencin, a town located near Grenoble in the department of Isère.
The artist used a pure color palette and played with contrasts. As usual, he uses a panoramic format for his compositions and works his painting using the knife technique to give vigor and depth to his composition.

Painter and priest of Tencin, friend of the painters Jules Flandrin and Henriette Deloras, Pierre Calès occupies a special place in the artistic landscape of Dauphiné.
It was at the age of 20 that he joined the minor seminary of Rondeau in Grenoble where he received advice from the abbot and painter Laurent Guétal. In 1902, at the age of 32, he was appointed abbot of the commune of Tencin. He remained abbot of the parish until the end of his life.
He quickly became known for his painting but also for his eccentricity: measuring almost 2 meters high and often surrounded by animals like his crocodile.
His works are kept in different museums: Grenoble Museum, Dauphinois Museum.

Dimensions: 44 x 75 cm seen without frame and 64.5 x 95.5 cm with its original gilded wood frame (old restorations to the frame should be noted).
