HURARD Joseph (1887-1956) “Fishermen in Brescon, Martigues” Oil on panel, Signed lower right, Numbered and titled on the back by the artist: “N°13 Martigues, Old Brescon, in the morning” Beautiful work by Avignon painter Joseph Hurard who represents a view of Bescon in Martigues, animated by fishermen in their boats. The artist was able to transcribe the atmosphere and colors of a sunrise on the banks of the water through the use of bright colors and playing on contrasts. A student of Pierre Grivolas and Charles Vionnet in Avignon, Joseph Hurard exhibited numerous landscapes at the Salon des Indépendants from 1908 to 1914, notably from Avignon and Villeneuve-les-Avignon. He joined the Group of Thirteen founded by Clément Brun. After the First World War, he exhibited in galleries in Marseille. In 1932, he settled in Martigues, a site he has been painting since 1913.
