MALFROY Charles (1862-1939)
"The mussel quay, Martigues 1895"
Oil on canvas,
Located bottom left: "The mussel quay in Martigues",
Signed and dated 1895 bottom right,
Beautiful luminous work by the painter Charles Malfroy which represents a lively view of the mussel quay in Martigues.
We can observe the workers sorting the mussels or mending the fishing nets, as well as fishermen in their boats.
The painter used a palette of warm colors which perfectly captures the light of a summer day in Provence.
We can compare our work to a composition by the painter Julien Gagliardini who also immortalized at the same time this corner of the quay in Martigues where the mussels are sorted.
Originally from Lyon, Charles Malfroy set up his painting studio in Martigues called the "Venice Provençale".
He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes français in 1891 and 1894. His submissions of Mediterranean landscapes in cheerful tones to regional exhibitions were awarded prizes by the jury and highly appreciated by collectors.
The artist produced views of small Mediterranean ports: Martigues, Cassis, Les Lecques, Bandol, etc. His son Henry Malfroy, also a painter, took over his studio in Martigues.
Nb: Old small restorations, without impact, are visible on the back.
Dimensions: 40.5 x 65 cm without frame and 52 x 77.5 cm with its wooden frame.
