 MEIFFREN, Marius (1855–1942)

“Scene on the Quai du Canal in Marseille”

Oil on canvas,
Signed lower left,

A beautiful major work by the Marseille painter Marius MEIFFREN depicting a lively scene on the Quai du Canal in Marseille. Notably, the bell tower of the Church of Les Accoules can be seen in the background.
The artist uses a vibrant color palette and plays with light to perfectly capture the atmosphere of a summer day in Marseille.

The brushwork, in a pointillist style, is precise.

This work is a beautiful testament to the bustling activity of the Port of Marseille in the early 20th century.
The painting was most likely displayed at an exhibition in Marseille.

A student at the Marseille School of Fine Arts, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1899, and again from 1926 to 1932. He also participated in exhibitions organized by Marseille artists and the Société des Artistes Provençaux.
He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Public Instruction.

Note: Previous restorations, which do not affect the viewing of the work, are visible on the back of the canvas.

Dimensions: 116 x 90 cm unframed and 144 x 117 cm with its original black wooden frame.
