A beautiful, luminous, and colorful work by the Marseille painter Louis Nattero, depicting a corner of the port of Ferrière, most likely in Martigues.
Through his colorful brushstrokes, the artist shows us the power of the late afternoon sun in Provence, where the facades of the buildings are bathed in light and the sails of the boats in the harbor blaze with color.
We can compare our painting to another work by the artist, sold in Monaco in 2019, depicting a very similar view and titled by the artist in the lower right corner of the canvas "Port of Toulon (Var)."
After an unhappy childhood, placed in an orphanage, he turned to painting. In 1891, he married in Toulon. At the age of 26, thanks to a scholarship from the city of Toulon, he became a student of Léon Bonnat in Paris.
However, suffering from lead poisoning, he was forced to cut short his Parisian studies. He then returned to Toulon before settling permanently in Marseille, his birthplace, in 1904.
His talent was quickly recognized, and his paintings were a great success with the Marseille and Toulon clientele.
From 1902 onward, he participated in exhibitions in Toulon and Marseille, where his talent was rewarded with numerous prizes.
Dimensions: 46 x 38 cm unframed and 63.5 x 55.5 cm with its original regilded wooden frame.
