NATTERO Louis (1870-1915)

"Sunset on the Beach"

Oil on canvas,
Signed lower left.

A beautiful work by the Marseilles painter Louis Nattero depicting a beach at sunset, enlivened by two fishermen in their boat. The scene is set either in Marseilles or Toulon, where the artist lived.
The artist pays particular attention to the interplay of light and contrasts to faithfully reproduce the sunset or sunrise in the Mediterranean.

After an unhappy childhood, placed in an orphanage, he turned to painting. In 1891, he married in Toulon. At the age of 26, thanks to a scholarship from the city of Toulon, he became a student of Léon Bonnat in Paris.
However, suffering from lead poisoning, he was forced to cut short his Parisian studies. He then returned to Toulon before settling permanently in Marseille, his birthplace, in 1904.
His talent was quickly recognized, and his paintings were a great success with clients in Marseille and Toulon.
From 1902 onwards, he participated in exhibitions in Toulon and Marseille, where his talent was rewarded with numerous prizes.

Note: Two small, inconsequential old restorations are visible on the back of the canvas in the lower left corner.

Dimensions: 27 x 40.5 cm unframed and 43 x 57 cm with its modern giltwood frame.
