Beautiful work by French painter Paul de Castro depicting a rare view of Villeneuve lez Avignon from rue de Montolivet.
The land in the foreground is now home to the Montolivet elementary school.
The former 17th-century townhouse, now converted into 15 housing units, can be seen on the left, as well as the Collégiale Notre-Dame church on the left.
Student of Fernand Cormon and Eugène Thirion at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, Paul de Castro exhibited landscapes of Rouen, Honfleur, Provence and Italy, as well as street views of Paris and interior scenes, notably of the Château de Versailles, at the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon de la Société National des Beaux-Arts and the Salon d'Automne.
From 1907 to 1932, Paul de Castro exhibited regularly in the Galerie Parisienne alongside other artists such as Auguste Chabaud, Lucien Simon and André Roberty.Of Italian origin, Paul de Castro became a naturalized French citizen. He was named chevalier of the Legion of Honor.
His works are today conserved in numerous museums in France:Musée Calvet in Avignon, Musée des beaux-arts de la Rochelle, Petit Palais and Musée d'Orsay in Paris; and abroad: Musée royal des beaux-arts d'Anvers.
