Beautiful luminous work by the Swiss painter, Etienne Robert which represents a Provencal landscape, with broom in bloom, in the surroundings of Marseille.

Born in Le Locle in the Canton of Neuchâtel in Switzerland, Etienne Robert trained in drawing, painting and calligraphy before coming to settle in Marseille where there was at that time a large Swiss diaspora. He started as a calligrapher in a company on the Cannebière, and practiced painting on the motif with other painter friends.
Little by little, he made painting his main activity and set up his studio in his house on Boulevard Vauban in Marseille. He traveled around Provence in search of subjects to paint. He would draw a sketch in situ then return to his studio to create the final paintings.
He also traveled to Italy, Corsica and a little in Switzerland which he found too green, however.
He regularly participated in exhibitions in Aix en Provence, Marseille and Switzerland where he had a clientele.
Etienne Robert painted until the age of 84.
