VIDAL, Gustave (1895–1966)
"Almond Trees in Bloom in the Alpilles"
Oil on canvas,
Signed lower right,
Titled on the back by the artist: "Provence - Almond Trees in Bloom - Gray Weather"
A beautiful, high-contrast work by the painter Gustave Vidal depicting an old farmhouse in Provence, most likely in the Alpilles near Fontveille, where the artist liked to set up his easel.
In the foreground, two figures can be seen returning to the farmhouse. The middle ground offers both an unobstructed view of a field being plowed and a view of the Alpilles.
The artist has perfectly captured the various shades of color and the play of light on a winter day in Provence, when the almond trees are in bloom and the light is still soft. At the center of his composition, the artist depicts the symbols of Provence: a blooming almond tree and a majestic cypress.
He studied at the Avignon School of Fine Arts under the guidance of painter Pierre Grivolas, who encouraged his students—including Gustave Vidal—to paint outdoors. He was influenced by the New School of Avignon and abstract painters.
His distinctive style blends the palette knife technique with pictorial stylization.
He received numerous awards early in his career and has exhibited worldwide.
Dimensions: 45 x 90 cm unframed and 55 x 100.5 cm with its gilded wooden frame
