Beautiful, luminous, high-contrast work by painter Gustave Vidal depicting a bustling little fishing port in the Mediterranean, most certainly in Corsica where the artist liked to paint his subjects.
The artist perfectly transcribed the different shades of color and the play of light on a Mediterranean summer's day, using brushstrokes and a controlled serif.
The painter also paid particular attention to the details of the buildings and the movements of the sea.
Student at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts d'Avignon under painter Pierre Grivolas, who encouraged his students, including Gustave Vidal, to paint outdoors. He came under the influence of the new Avignon school and abstract painters.
His distinctive style blends knife techniques with pictorial stylization.
He won numerous awards from the outset, and exhibits worldwide.
Dimensions : 46 x 55 cm unframed and 54.5 x 64 cm with its original wooden frame.
