ZWILLER Marie-Augustin (1850-1939)

"Still life with plums, apple and pear"

Oil on cardboard,
Signed lower right,

Beautiful work by the Alsatian painter Marie-Augustin Zwiller which depicts a still life with fruit on an entablature.
Like the artist Jean-Jacques Henner, Zwiller depicts a still life with fruit which is characterized by the simplicity of their composition and its play of light.

Orphaned, Marie-Augustin Zwiller found a job in a fabric printing factory where he was responsible for producing the preparatory drawings.
This first job allowed him to be admitted to the Mulhouse drawing school where he won several prizes between 1867 and 1869. Subsequently, he became a drawing teacher in Mulhouse.
He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes français from 1882 and received numerous distinctions.
In 1883, he went to Paris and set up his studio in Neuilly.
In 1912, Zwiller was appointed a member of the Paris Salon, which included the most famous painters of the time.

His works are held in private collections and in various French museums, notably at the Musée des Beaux-arts in Mulhouse and the Musée Sundgauvien in Altkirch.

Dimensions: 16.5 x 22 cm without frame and 22.5 x 28.5 cm with its gilded wooden frame.
